Blaketon receives complaints about rock music being broadcast from a pirate radio station. Nick and Phil who have been enjoying the music, reluctantly seek out the station which is broadcasting from a ship at sea. But they are pleased to discover it is out past the 3 mile limit. Nick, Gina, Phil and Maggie go to a club one night where Maggie's brother is working as a DJ, he is also the DJ on the pirate radio ship. Things take a different turn when Maggie's brother discovers that some of the people he's working with are distributing LSD. Joe Norten is back in Aidensfield after doing time for arson, but he is doing his best to go straight. His friends however tempt him into trying the LSD which makes him fall off a building to his death. Nick goes undercover as a DJ to investigate. The ship moves back into the 3 mile limit and the dealers are caught, but Nick lets the pirate radio continue! Blaketon is annoyed when the evidence he had against Greengrass for making whisky goes up in smoke

CID catches the robbers after the job but when Tosh tries to arrange protection for his informant he is too late as the man has had his face slashed. Reg talks to Donna for an article in the station newspaper.

The Bettabuys judges vote Luddenden Foot third, Blundell Sands second and Stalybridge first. Raquel blames pre-contest sex with Curly. When Ken tries to lecture Jim, he gets the cold shoulder. Curly, in underpants, catches Brendan planning to seduce Raquel. Raquel shuts them both out in the corridor. WART member Vivian Barford convinces Alf that he must stand for Council.

Curly's plans for a dirty weekend with Raquel go off the rails when Reg announces that he will chaperone Raquel to the competition.

Curly blackmails Reg into changing his mind about chaperoning Raquel - Curly has the crucial evidence on the trolley-race scam (the book of raffle tickets) which he spirited from Reg's desk just before the investigator arrived. Dierdre advises Steph not to dig in her heels too hard, but Des appears to be getting her goat - which ends with Steph smashing a whole set of crockery. In the Rovers', Ken overhears Jim boasting to Alec about Andy's bookmaking scheme at school.

Ken apologises to Alma for spoiling her Christmas. He suggests they go away for the New Year and she agrees, so they set off for the Cotswolds. Bet is humiliated and wishes Alec was back. Gail is touched when Ivy buys David a present and Curly is upset that Angie is with Des and gets drunk.
