War es tatsächlich Selbstmord? Doris Röttger ist überzeugt, dass der Reitlehrer Markus Hoffschulte ihren Mann auf dem Gewissen hat. Tatsächlich bestreitet der Frauenschwarm Hoffschulte bei seiner Vernehmung durch Kommissar Frank Thiel nicht, sich mit dem Restaurantbesitzer Röttger kurz vor dessen Tod heftig gestritten zu haben. Angeblich ging es um Geld. Tatsächlich hat der Reitlehrer den Ehemann seiner ehemaligen Geliebten bei dieser Gelegenheit wohl mit Wahrheiten konfrontiert, die dieser besser nicht hätte wissen sollen... Ganz andere Probleme beschäftigen Rechtsmediziner Prof. Karl-Friedrich Boerne. Seine knapp 18-jährige Nichte Betty tanzt ihm auf der Nase herum. Entsprechend positiv überrascht ist er, als sie auf dem angesehenen Reiterhof von Hoffschulte und seiner Frau Miriam einen Ferienjob annimmt. Sie soll sich unter anderem um das wertvolle schwarze Zuchtpferd Rasputin kümmern. Doch ausgerechnet Rasputin wird kurz darauf entführt. Als er wieder auftaucht, ist er als Deckhengst nicht mehr zu gebrauchen - er wurde kastriert, und Hoffschulte ist finanziell ruiniert. Doch außer Betty scheint niemand wirklich Mitleid mit dem Reitlehrer zu haben. Im Gegenteil: Überall, wo Boerne und Thiel sich umhören, stoßen sie auf Schadenfreude. Anscheinend war Doris Röttger nicht die Einzige, die mit dem Herzensbrecher noch eine Rechnung offen hat. Ein Drohbrief an der Stalltür spricht eine deutliche Sprache: „Das war nur der Anfang. Du bist ein toter Mann." Wenig später gibt es auf dem Reiterhof eine Explosion.
