Bäckström has been suspended, but can't stop himself from helping the homicide investigation - now with the young boy Edvin in tow. Together they go to the scout camp grounds to confront the scout leader Haqvin, who's been linked to both Jaidee and the location where her body was hidden.

Bäckström is heartbroken by a great betrayal, but the work must still be done. Important questions are still to be answered. Who killed Jaidee? And why? And if it is possible to die twice, that must mean you can live twice as well?

Bäckström has a theory about what might have happened to Jaidee - that she might have faked her own death in the tsunami. But the team is sceptical and Bäckström can't prove anything. Yet. Ankan's crackdown brings little to no result, and she suspects that someone at the police station might have warned the ring of robbers. When traces point to Bäckström, Hwass receives support in her quest to get Bäckström fired.

Bäckström travels to Thailand to dig for clues about the circumstances around Jaidee's life and death. Meanwhile, the investigative team in Stockholm is following up on another lead - the missing Asian woman Mi Mi. Everything seems to point to Jaidee having died in the tsunami, and soon Mi Mi’s husband is arrested. Bäckström starts to doubt himself, until he follows the footsteps of Jaidee and Daniel, and makes discoveries that illuminate what might have happened.

The notorious homicide detective Evert Bäckström is visited by his neighbour, the boy scout Edvin, who's made a macabre discovery; a woman's cranium with a bullethole. Who is she and how did she die? Convinced there's been a crime, Bäckström opens a murder investigation, which is immediately met with resistance. When they finally find out the identity of the woman, the investigation takes a turn. Bäckström realises that this might be the hardest murder mystery he’s ever been faced with.

Jaidee seems to have died twice, both at Ofärdsön (Misfortune Island) and during the tsunami catastrophe. Bäckström wants to interrogate the widower Daniel, but Hwass puts a stop to it as the tsunami is a sensitive issue and besides - it can’t possibly have been his wife that was found on the island. Bäckström remains firm in his belief. The investigative team doubt Bäckström as well, but he doesn't give up and continues to follow up on his leads - behind Hwass' back.

Bäckström receives death threats and it seems that Tina is the only one who can help him. The police, led by Ankan and Olsson, are spying on Bäckström's best friend in the hope of leading the investigation forward.

Bäckström realizes that he must hand over Pinocchio to the Russians. The only problem is that he does not know where the music box is. The Duck finally sees through Bäckström's lies and their relationship is put to the test.

Ankan begins to question Bäckström's honesty. Eriksson turns out to have carried a big secret and now light has just been shed on the night of the murder. At the same time, Olsson risks ruining the entire investigation.

An old Russian music box made of gold, depicting the fairy tale character Pinocchio worth around SEK 300 million, seems to be the motive for the murders. Bäckström is trying to map the game owner's former owner.

Bäckström is first on the scene after the celebrity lawyer Tomas Eriksson is murdered. The police cannot initially rule out that Bäckström himself is the killer. Eriksson was his nemesis. At the same time, new information about the victim's love life is revealed.

Eriksson's murder seems to be intractable, not least when Bäckström is suspended from the investigation and Ankan is forced to take the helm. Bäckström begins to dig into the beating of the baron Von Comer and it soon turns out that the two cases are connected.
